| We left
Santiago via Highway 1 (Autopista Durante) and traveled past tobacco
fields and drying sheds. |

Back on Highway 5 going
north toward Puerto Plata. Our friends Melinda, Angus, Sveta and
Annie took this route the next day and their car quit running
outside the tunnel. It started up again later but not till after
they had walked to a local home nearby to try and get help. |
